Pitrová and Koudelková on the European Citizens' Initiative

6 Oct 2025

Markéta Pitrová, in collaboration with Anežka Koudelková, a Master's student of European Studies, published an article titled "European citizens’ initiative: is a year enough to collect a million signatures?" in the academic journal European Politics and Society published by Taylor and Francis.

In the text, the authors critically assess the so-called European Citizens' Initiative (ECI), a tool of direct democracy that enables EU citizens to submit legislative proposals, provided they meet the condition of collecting one million signatures. They compare the Initiative with similar instruments in member states and contrast the approaches of the relevant stakeholders. They conclude, among other things, that the time limits for the Initiative are insufficient to lead to quality proposals and meet the demands of citizens.
