Urbanovská, Rapoš Božič, and Mokrá: How Czechia has redefined its position towards Germany in connection with the war in Ukraine
In a new article in the Journal of International Relations and Development, Jana Urbanovská, Ivana Rapoš Božič, and Mária Mokrá focus on Czechia's political discourse towards Germany based on both countries' reactions to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Through an analysis of public statements by Czech politicians and analysts from 2022-2023, the authors reveal that images of "the Self" versus "the Other" in Czech political discourse on Germany serve to highlight Czechia's moral superiority over Germany and the related reassessment of political asymmetry between the two countries. On a more general level, the authors emphasize that political asymmetry in bilateral relations is not objectively given, but socially constructed and conditioned by changing contexts.
