Petr Marek on the obstacles to the tourist utilisation of historical borders

29 Oct 2025

Petr Marek has published a new article in The Geographical Journal by the Royal Geographical Society under the Wiley publishing house.
The article discusses the obstacles to the tourist utilisation of historical borders, focusing on the analysis of data concerning the Czech-Moravian border. The author's interest was in what functions and meanings this historical border has for ordinary people living in the historical borderland, and whether they perceive this border at all.
Two identified obstacles to the touristification of the Czech-Moravian border appear to be the lack of knowledge of its location and a negative perception sometimes associated with Moravian separatism. On a theoretical level, the author proposes distinguishing between two concepts that are still often confused: the relict border and the phantom border.
