Petr Marek co-authored an article on a new way of defining geographical regions

8 Apr 2025

Petr Marek is a co-author of a newly published text titled "Territorial identity of a region: A review of data collection techniques," which appeared in the scientific journal Hungarian Geographical Bulletin.

The text, which Petr wrote with Martin Bartůněk from Jan Evangelista Purkyně University, deals with data collection techniques for defining regions according to the so-called new regional geography.

New regional geography is not just about objective facts, like traditional geography. Regional identity as a social construct plays a much larger role here. Furthermore, new regional geography acknowledges human subjectivity and, therefore, the fact that everyone can perceive a certain region differently, which can also cause conflicts. New regional geography thus has a much greater explanatory potential for what is happening around us.
