Monika Brusenbauch Meislová Explores Unlearned Lessons of British Europeanism in New Article

18 Jul 2025

Monika Brusenbauch Meislová’s latest article, "Lessons unlearned: the persistence of fear-based discourse in the 2016–2023 communication of new Europeanist actors in the United Kingdom", has just been published in Innovation: The European Journal of Social Science Research (Routledge, Taylor & Francis).

The study explores how key pro-European actors in the UK (namely the European Movement UK and Best for Britain) have continued to rely on fear-based messaging in their public communications, despite the well-documented backlash against such strategy during the 2016 Brexit referendum. Drawing on frame analysis and critical discourse analysis, the article highlights the enduring presence of the fear-based discourse in the post-referendum period, raising important questions about strategic communication and lessons left unlearned by the new wave of British Europeanism.

The article forms part of an exciting special issue, "The New Wave of Europeanism as a Counterreaction to EU Crises", edited by Natasza Styczyńska and Nikola Petrović.
