Monika Brusenbauch Meislová Publishes New Article on the Liberal Democrats and Brexit in British Politics
Monika Brusenbauch Meislová, together with Pauline Schnapper (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle), has published a new article in British Politics (Palgrave Macmillan), examining the evolving discourse of the UK Liberal Democrats on Brexit and the United Kingdom’s relationship with the European Union since the 2016 referendum.
The article traces the party’s journey from campaigning for a second referendum and pledging to revoke Article 50, through accepting Brexit as a political reality, to advocating a return to the single market. The authors explore how these different positions have accumulated over time, creating what they call temporal layering in political discourse, and what that means for the coherence of the party’s message on the EU.
