29 Apr 2026

Monika Brusenbauch Meislová has published a chapter in The Routledge Handbook of European Union Politics, edited by Michèle Knodt, Natalia Chaban, Oriol Costa, and Patrick Mueller. The book represents an important contribution to current debates on European Union politics and brings together a strong lineup of leading experts in European studies, including names such as Vivien Schmidt, Claudio Radaelli, Michelle Cini, and Frank Schimmelfennig.

The book offers a broad perspective on the European Union as a political system, ranging from institutional functioning through issues of participation, identity, and political conflicts to the EU’s external role in a changing global environment. Monika’s chapter focuses on Brexit and how the European Union has responded to the United Kingdom’s departure. It focuses in particular on the negotiations of the Withdrawal Agreement and the subsequent Trade and Cooperation Agreement, the role of key actors, and the EU’s efforts to maintain the unity of the EU-27.
