Martin Chovančík lead co-editor of a European Security special issue on European defence production
Martin Chovančík was a lead co-editor of a new special issue of European Security, one of the most prestigious international journals in the field of European security. Entitled Arming Europe – Reconceptualising European Defence Production, the special issue addresses one of the central questions facing European security today: how Europe is rebuilding and expanding its defence production and how this process can be coordinated internationally.
After decades of relative decline, European states face the challenge of substantially expanding their defence production capacities. The question is not simply one of higher defence spending, but also what and where Europe should produce, how long-term priorities should be set, and what roles states, companies and European institutions play in the process.
The special issue also explores how technological developments, dual-use technologies and algorithmic systems are reshaping the boundaries of defence production itself. It examines changing political, public and media perceptions of defence production, the role of the defence industry in European strategic autonomy, and the growing importance of European institutions.
As the main co-editor, Martin Chovančík co-authored the special issue’s Introduction and co-authored two additional research articles. The special issue also includes research by Adriana Ilavská and Oldřich Krpec.
